Hello! I’m April Tideman, of the English Department here at Monte Vista Middle School. I’m from San Bernardino County, California—an area not unlike the San Luis Valley. I grew up in a community firmly rooted in family, agriculture, cultural diversity, and appreciation for the outdoors. During the winter months, I took field trips to Big Bear where I first learned how to ski, it was not pleasant. In the summer, I swam in the ocean and enjoyed the beauty and cultural richness of Ensenada and Rosarito Beach, Mexico. I moved to the San Luis Valley over 15 years ago. Some of my favorite activities include fishing, camping, and watching the Fourth of July parade in Creede.
Prior to my career as an educator, I served in multiple management roles in the retail fashion and restaurant industries. Education has been a life-long passion for me, and provides the platform for me to prepare students for success. I graduated from Adams State College in 2005, with a BA in English.
In May 2017, I received a Master's degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Texas, with honors and recently received principal certification. Recently, I designed a pilot program at Monte Vista Middle School—Juntos! (Together). The purpose of this program is to strengthen communication between parents and teachers, as well as enhance the academic performance of students, through home visits and special events.
As a wife, mom of two young kids, and a working professional, I understand the challenges of trying to juggle so many responsibilities. My goal is to make it as easy and convenient as possible.
Here in the San Luis Valley, we’re not only teachers, students, and parents--we’re neighbors. Whether you see me at a Pirates game, at the gas station, or floating down the Rio Grande in an inner-tube.
This is my fourth year at Monte Vista Middle School, and I am so honored to be apart of this community and staff. I have been teaching for 14 years, and can honestly say that I still have a passion for both my students and ELA.
Please be aware of my open door policy and feel free to visit anytime!
